Los Angeles or bust

Dinner with old friends and new triplets (see photos) on the Bay. We left the Fort Barry Hostel, Sausilito, before the fog lifted but survived the "5 minute red light"--you sure dont want to wait 4 and a half minutes instead, it's a popular place for a half-mile tunnel with no side exits--to be shocked by the condition of California highways. Many potholes later we had a great view of the Altamont pass wind farm on the way to Newhall to check in with Joan and Don for a few days.

On Our Way

The turn onto Interstate 84 was a Neil Armstrong moment (one small turn for the car, one giant turn for our lives). It was a tearful moment with Ben and Kissy (our cat) both wailing. I didn't expect that and it hurt to see him in pain. Jules and I felt similar but didn't show it.

In order to make it positive in my mind, I took it as a huge confirmation of our decision in the late 90's to move to Hood River. We thought it would be really good, we just didn't think high enough.

Last night we saw "Two Gentlemen from Verona" in Ashland's great outdoor theatre. More silliness of mistaken identities and people doing everything for love. Funny updates to modern times that included Mennonites and punks.

We're back at the Columbia Hotel, a sweet little place on the main street. After a bookstore or two, we'll keep heading South to LA.
